Just Move Into A New Home? Build Your Own Bookshelf With Two Old Ladders And Wood

If you're outfitting your new living room with some awesome furniture, you are probably spending a lot of time looking for the items that you desire. Additionally, you might want a unique decorative item or two to make your place even more special and unique than what it already is. To do this, you're probably considering building some items for your new space on your own. If this sounds like something you want to try, locate two old wooden ladders and use this guide to build a unique bookshelf.

Step 1: Measure the Width of the Rungs

Gather a measuring tape along with a pad of paper and pencil. Measure the width of your ladder's rungs to know how wide your bookshelf planks can be. If the rungs are not symmetrical, measure each one and write down the measurements accordingly.

Step 2: Procure Your Other Supplies

  • 1-inch wooden planks (pick up the amount desired and have them cut at your hardware store)
  • paint (in your choice of color for the ladders)
  • two medium paintbrushes
  • wood stain (optional)
  • a drop cloth

Step 3: Paint the Ladder

Choose a well-ventilated area, such as an open garage or shaded yard, and cover the floor or grass with the drop cloth. Using the paintbrush lightly give each ladder 2-4 coats of paint allowing drying time between each coat. Don't forget to paint the rungs and the inside of the ladder as well.

Step 4: Paint or Stain the Wood

Gather your cut planks and the second paintbrush to paint or stain each plank. Be careful to allow plenty of dry time and paint the tops, bottoms and sides of each plank. If you choose to stain the wood, follow the directions on the stain container to ensure proper application.

Step 5: Set the Wood In Place and Decorate

Once the ladders and planks are dry, move them inside to your desired location. Set up the ladders next to each other forming an "M" shape and carefully slide each plank into place.

To keep the planks from teetering, decorate from the middle of the planks outward.

Once you have your unique bookshelf in place, you can store any items on it that you want. In fact, you can even use this for Christmas villages or other seasonal décor. Ask a local furniture expert (such as Heary Art & Sons Furniture Inc) for ideas that their previous clients may have used to create even more unique items yourself for your one-of-a-kind home.
